Drone Attack on Egyptian Shipping Target Confirmed
President Donald Trump has addressed the recent drone strike aimed at maritime shipping in Egypt.
While talking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, he revealed that he had been briefed on the incident, which involved an unidentified drone hitting a gas storage tanker at the Egyptian port of Damietta.
The New York Times reported, citing two unnamed sources linked to Iran, that this strike was intended to demonstrate how global shipping and energy supplies could suffer disruptions if Iran chose to escalate tensions. However, it was unclear whether the attack originated from Iran itself or one of its affiliated groups.
“I’ve received a report. It’s a bit more of the same, but we’re going to get things sorted out,” Trump commented. “We’re set to hit them hard because it’s time for us to respond. They know what’s coming,” he added.
This drone strike represents the first incident affecting Egyptian territory amidst the ongoing regional tensions. The drone targeted the LNG tanker Energos Winter, which ignited a fire that also impacted another vessel.
Egyptian officials have confirmed that the fire has been contained and normal operations at the port have resumed.
This incident occurred not long after rockets were launched at U.S. forces stationed in Jordan, although those attacks were successfully intercepted by air defenses.
