Trump Announces Construction of New White House Ballroom
President Donald Trump shared on Sunday that a “massive complex” is being developed beneath the new White House ballroom, which is entirely funded by private contributions. This underground facility is designed to include bulletproof glass and defenses against drone attacks.
Trump emphasized that this project aims to cater to large events and visits from dignitaries, pointing out that existing spaces are insufficient for bigger gatherings. “The military is constructing a large complex underneath the banquet hall, which is currently being built, and it’s going quite well,” he stated.
He mentioned that construction has already begun, emphasizing that it’s closely linked to security measures at the location, explaining that the ballroom’s design complements what’s happening below it.
Some Democrats have raised concerns, calling the funding approach related to this project “blatant bribery,” suggesting that restrictions on the White House banquet halls financed by Trump donations may be necessary.
Enhancements in the ballroom will include robust materials and designs intended to withstand modern threats. “We’ve got bulletproof glass, roofs and ceilings designed to block drones,” Trump said. “Everything is drone-proof and bulletproof—sadly, that’s the world we live in.” He underscored that the project is solely financed by private donations, with no taxpayer money involved.
As this construction moves forward, a federal judge is now inquiring about the specifics of the ballroom project.
The ballroom’s proposal received backing from the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts in February, which approved the nearly $400 million initiative with unanimous support.
This new facility is set to rise where the former East Wing was situated, which had been demolished in October. The aim is to significantly enhance the White House’s capabilities to host large-scale events, especially since the previous East Wing dining area only accommodated about 200 attendees.
In response to the ongoing changes, Michelle Obama expressed her discontent regarding the East Wing’s demolition, raising questions about the historical significance of such alterations.
Trump stated, “Every dollar spent comes from myself and my donors…not a single penny of government funds is being used for the banquet halls.” He noted that progress is swift and ahead of schedule, underscoring efficiency by claiming the project is under budget.
He also mentioned the ballroom’s architectural features are meant to harmonize with the White House’s historic style, stressing the importance of maintaining that aesthetic. “I believe it will become the greatest banquet hall anywhere in the world,” Trump declared, highlighting the tribute to the iconic structure.
