Trump Discusses Air Force One Upgrade and Security Measures

On Sunday night, President Trump confirmed that the Air Force One aircraft, which was provided by Qatar, has been temporarily grounded to enhance its anti-missile capabilities. This announcement came after he used an older version of the plane to attend the NATO summit in Turkey earlier this month.

“There’s a lot of capability there, and from what I understand, they plan to send it out in about a month,” Trump commented to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, just after his return from the World Cup finals in New Jersey.

“So they’ll send it out, and, you know, make the most of it. I think it’ll take about a month,” he added.

Trump, who is 80, earlier declared on July 8 that he would be using an older plane for the flight from Ankara to Britain’s Mildenhall air base. This was supposedly to allow U.S. troops stationed there to view the newer aircraft.

However, quickly, there was speculation that security issues stemming from the ongoing conflict with Iran were the real motive behind the last-minute change in aircraft.

U.S. officials have long been cautious about disclosing specifics about the older Air Force One, leading many to believe it is equipped with technology designed to prevent interception.

On July 10, the office of Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton issued subpoenas to various reporters after the New York Times released a story indicating that a Qatari plane had been deployed to the UK as a “security precaution” following a warning from the Secret Service.

The article raised concerns about whether the Boeing 747-8 had received sufficient safety upgrades, including modern missile defense systems, before it was put into service.

White House communications director Stephen Chan commented on the situation on July 9, stating, “As the President recently mentioned, many adversaries of the United States are focused on him. We are employing all available means to mitigate those threats, including distraction and misdirection.”

During the NATO summit, Trump elaborated on an assassination plot against him by Iran, claiming he was “number one on the kill list.” He expressed, “They want to remove me as the leader of the United States. …So far, I consider myself a bit lucky, but I don’t think that will last forever.”
