Trump states US deal will benefit UK luxury car manufacturers

On Thursday, President Trump highlighted the potential advantages of trade agreements with the UK for its automotive sector, especially for luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

As part of the new trade deal revealed at the Oval Office, the US has agreed to reduce tariffs on British car imports from 25% to 10%.

“I managed to lower it from 25 to 10 for Rolls-Royce because we can’t produce it here. I didn’t even request that they do this,” Trump commented. “It’s a unique vehicle, made in limited quantities. It’s not one of those massive manufacturers that churn out millions of cars. They produce very few high-end models like Bentleys and Jaguars.”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed reporters that the UK exports approximately 100,000 cars to the US annually.

“For the UK automotive sector, this means tens of thousands of jobs that the president has committed to safeguarding,” Lutnick added.

During the same announcement, Trump and British officials discussed trade agreements that are yet to be finalized but are being promoted as beneficial for both economies.

Trump noted that the deal would enhance access to US exports worth billions, especially increasing UK access to American beef, ethanol, and other agricultural goods. He also mentioned that the UK would work to eliminate non-tariff barriers affecting US products and expedite the customs processes for American goods.

The automotive sector has been at the forefront of Trump’s recent tariff strategies as he has enforced significant tariffs on imports, including steel, aluminum, and vehicles.

Last week, Trump signed an order to lower the previously announced 25% tariffs on imported cars and auto parts.

Additionally, companies are permitted to request a 15% price reduction for their first year and a 10% reduction in the second year to encourage domestic car production.
