Calls for Transparency on Khashoggi Phone Call

Representative Eugene Vindman, a Democrat from Virginia, is urging President Donald Trump to disclose details from his 2019 phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, emphasizing that Americans “have a right to know” what transpired following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Vindman, a retired Army colonel who previously served on Trump’s National Security Council, expressed his concern over this meeting, which he considers one of two key discussions that troubled him. The other being the controversial conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which resulted in Trump’s first impeachment.

At a press conference alongside Hanan Alter Khashoggi, widow of the slain journalist, Vindman criticized Trump for prioritizing a foreign leader’s interests over American intelligence assessments. He remarked, “The Khashoggi family and the American people deserve to know the content of that call.” Vindman highlighted the intelligence community’s conclusion that the Crown Prince ordered Khashoggi’s murder, suggesting that Trump’s actions could compromise America’s credibility.

Vindman’s stance has sparked a mix of responses in the politically charged atmosphere surrounding Trump’s presidency. He and his brother, Alexander, became prominent figures during the first impeachment inquiry. They emphasized that the ruling which placed Saudi Arabia under U.S. jurisdiction for its alleged involvement in the attacks underscores the necessity of transparency.
