Trump suggests New Orleans as the next target for federal crime measures

President Trump mentioned New Orleans as a potential target for his crime-fighting efforts on Wednesday, highlighting its Republican leadership and aiming to address federal crime issues.

“We’re focused now—should we go to Chicago or somewhere like New Orleans, where the great governor Jeff Landry is?” he said.

While discussing other matters, he suggested that federal law enforcement could tackle crime in New Orleans more efficiently than in Washington, D.C., which recently saw troops deployed.

“So, we’re likely headed to Louisiana, specifically New Orleans. It has a crime issue. We can fix it in about two weeks; it’s easier than D.C.,” Trump added.

He has criticized cities led by Democrats, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles, as part of his broader anti-crime agenda, urging the governor for collaboration.

In D.C., Trump’s authority to send the National Guard relies on local regulations that permit such actions without needing approval from city officials.

He also called on Chicago leaders to ask for assistance with crime, emphasizing that residents are looking for help.

“But we can clean up Chicago. All they need to do is reach out to us. If politicians there aren’t supporting us, let us know who is,” Trump stated.

New Orleans, while having a Democratic mayor, is governed by Republican Landry.

Trump touted his achievements in D.C., branding it as a “completely safe city” and claimed that crime there has dropped by 100%.

Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom referenced crime rates in Louisiana, arguing they were lower than in his state. In response, Speaker Mike Johnson remarked, “Gavin Newsom just looks for attention. He can say whatever he wants.”
