Trump Calls for CNN’s Inclusion in Warner Bros. Sale
On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump expressed that CNN should play a significant role in the sale of Warner Bros. Studios. During a press briefing at the White House, he stated, “I think the people who ran CNN for so long should be ashamed. It’s crucial for CNN to be included in any deal.” He seemed to suggest that while it’s important to leave some resources for CNN, he criticized the network, calling it a source of misinformation.
Trump commented that the current leadership at CNN appears to be either corrupt or ineffective, asserting, “No one is watching. Very few people are watching.” He feels that the management of the network has tarnished its reputation and that any potential sale should ensure CNN’s inclusion or separate sale.
As the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery heats up, Paramount and Netflix are vying for control. Paramount’s owner, David Ellison, launched an aggressive $108 billion takeover bid that includes CNN. Meanwhile, Netflix’s proposals have focused primarily on specific assets like the studio and HBO rather than the entire parent company.
In recent months, Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to split into two entities: one focusing on the studio and HBO, and the other on its cable networks. Despite Paramount appearing to have the upper hand in negotiations, Netflix recently disrupted the market dynamics with a substantial offer of around $83 billion.
Concerns among CNN staff about Ellison potentially taking control of the network are prevalent. Insiders fear that he may bring drastic changes, reminiscent of the overhaul at CBS News, which many colleagues regard negatively.
Trump’s involvement in the bidding process could complicate matters for both Paramount and Netflix. Previously, he has praised Netflix and its CEO, Ted Sarandos, while positioning himself as an impartial figure in this particular deal. Trump indicated that he hasn’t made any decisions regarding which bid to support, even with connections to the private equity funding for Paramount.
Rumors about Ellison’s agenda to amend CNN’s editorial direction have circulated, raising the stakes further. Critics argue that his connections to Trump may sway editorial policies toward more centrist views. Meanwhile, the anticipation and uncertainty around the sale continue to build as Warner Bros. Discovery looks for a buyer amidst these contentious negotiations.
