On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that he has finalized a peace agreement facilitated by leaders from Armenia and Azerbaijan, marking the seventh conflict resolution achieved globally in recent months.
The announcement took place during a meeting in a state cafeteria, featuring a significant agreement regarding the Nakichevan territory, alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
“Together, we have successfully established peace. We left the oval office after signing a comprehensive document that includes very important elements,” Trump stated.
“Both Armenia and Azerbaijan have committed to ending all hostilities permanently, while also working on fostering trade, travel, and diplomatic relations, and recognizing each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.
The countries agreed on a plan titled “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity,” which aims to ensure Azerbaijan has “full access” to the Nakichevan enclave in southwestern Armenia.
“This declaration sets the groundwork. It’s a significant honor for me, and I did not pursue it. The route for international peace and prosperity will create a transport corridor allowing Azerbaijan full access to Nakichevan,” Trump remarked.
He also mentioned that the U.S. and Armenia will collaborate to establish this route.
Using trade as a leverage point for securing peace agreements, like the one previously made between Thailand and Cambodia, Trump expressed that American businesses are eager to invest in the region, emphasizing the economic potential for all three nations.
“They’re really looking forward to entering both countries and are prepared to invest a substantial amount of money, which will be beneficial for our economies. This is promising news for the future of the entire region, which, as you know, is incredibly important,” he noted.
Trump further explained that the U.S. has also formed bilateral agreements with both nations to enhance trade, energy, and technological partnerships, including in areas like artificial intelligence.
The two leaders welcomed the peace agreement that would conclude the 35-year-long conflict.
“Today will be a significant day in Azerbaijani history, as the people express pride and gratitude towards their President for this initiative,” Aliyev commented.
Pashinyan described the event as a “significant milestone” for their countries’ relations.
“Today, we’ve achieved an important milestone in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. We are laying the groundwork for a better future than we’ve experienced in the past,” he remarked, adding that this breakthrough would not have been feasible without President Trump’s personal engagement and unwavering commitment to peace in the region.
