Trump-Supported World Liberty Plans ‘Exit Strategy’ for Maldives Hotel Tokenization Project

Trump-Supported World Liberty Plans 'Exit Strategy' for Maldives Hotel Tokenization Project

Simply put

  • World Liberty Financial is embarking on a tokenization initiative to build a luxury resort in the Maldives.
  • The related tokens will include an exit mechanism for accredited investors.
  • Historically, some tokenized assets have struggled with liquidity.

Holding onto a digital asset for four years feels like ages in the cryptocurrency world. So, how does a DeFi project backed by Trump entice investors to fund a luxury resort in the Maldives that’s slated to open in 2030?

According to World Liberty Financial (WLFI) and Saudi real estate developer Derglobal, the solution lies in a unique exit mechanism intended to bridge the divide between the short attention spans typical of meme coins and the slow-paced nature of international real estate.

This plan will be outlined in an upcoming prospectus for the Trump-affiliated cryptocurrency venture, which aims to develop 100 beachfront and overwater villas across the island group, as noted by Derglobal’s CEO, Ziad El Char. Delays, however, should be taken into account.

“We’ve designed a structure that allows us to exit if the situation isn’t favorable,” he explained. “And honestly, staying put doesn’t yield any benefits either.”

WLFI claims that by implementing tokenization at the development phase instead of after completion, they unlock high-margin development revenue typically monopolized by large banks.

The tokens are expected to offer investors a fixed return rate and facilitate loan income from around $300 million in real estate. In the future, these tokens might also allow for income distribution or a share of profits from real estate sales.

El Char mentioned that Derglobal is committed to having a substantial stake in the project, holding at least 30%, which is significantly higher than the common industry norm of 10%.

“Everyone’s interests are aligned to successfully launch and operate this resort,” he noted, pointing out that the design of this ultra-luxury project is intentionally kept straightforward.

Tokens will be issued in collaboration with Securitize, utilizing infrastructure crafted by specialists from BlackRock. “Tokenizing real estate is one of the trickiest asset classes,” highlighted CEO Carlos Domingo in a press release.

Domingo stated in December that while tokenization can simplify investments in foreign real estate, the challenge of exiting positions has often been overlooked.

“Providing liquidity in an asset class is equally as crucial as making it accessible,” he shared. “Though there has been a notion that tokenization would make illiquid assets more liquid, the reality is, these assets remain illiquid regardless.”

Many companies have experimented with real estate tokenization before, but this project aims to “broaden the options” for crypto investors with varying time horizons, according to Eric Trump, co-founder of World Liberty Financial.

“For quick trades, just stick to meme coins,” he remarked. “This offers the public a choice they didn’t have previously.”

However, it’s important to note that the company’s offerings are limited to accredited investors, which means a significant portion of the project’s proceeds will not be available to the general public. President Trump has expressed a desire for the group to broaden its reach over time, moving away from reliance on large banks.

El Char mentioned that eventually, investors could convert their holdings into shares in the Maldivian resort if they choose to do so. Additionally, the tokens will come with some “lifestyle perks” and should be available to eligible investors in the coming month.
