Allies of President Trump spoke out against California Governor Gavin Newsom on Saturday following a controversial comment. Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem expressed her frustration, labeling it a “bad day.” This response comes after Newsom signed legislation aimed at protecting immigrant communities, a move linked to significant protests over deportations that erupted in Los Angeles back in June.
During a press conference, Newsom asserted that the legislation his administration implemented stands in stark contrast to the claims made by Noem. His office’s tweet sparked backlash, coinciding with the conference. Newsom’s team tweeted, “Christie Noem is going to have a bad day today. You’re welcome, America,” which drew criticism from Trump administration members.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), reacted by stating, “This reads like a threat. It’s ugly.” She also criticized Newsom’s team as a “keyboard warrior team,” suggesting they lacked the courage to confront issues face-to-face. This comment followed Newsom’s growing engagement with social media.
Other Trump administration officials voiced their displeasure as well. Stephen Chen, White House Director of Communications, condemned Newsom’s tweet as “beyond pale and totally disgusting,” attributing it to what he described as the governor’s extreme messaging. Meanwhile, California Representative Bill Essayli labeled Newsom’s statement a potential threat to Secret Service safety, emphasizing the need for strict measures against any threats to government officials.
Vivek Ramaswamy, campaigning for GOP nomination in Ohio, added his criticism, indicating that such behavior isn’t what America needs at this moment.
Newsom has positioned himself as a notable critic of Trump, especially after a dispute over the deployment of National Guard and Marines without his consent. He has even filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, while mocking the president on social media platforms.
On Saturday, he responded to McLaughlin using a popular meme, highlighting her comments as a “threat.” He also shared screenshots from an article detailing Trump’s past support for the January 6 rioters and remarks from former Congressman Liz Cheney regarding Trump’s confrontational statements during the 2024 election cycle.
This escalation in rhetoric comes in light of heightened political tensions in the U.S., particularly after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah. His death has prompted discussions on the necessity for both Democrats and Republicans to tone down their political rhetoric amid escalating concerns about political violence.
