New White House Ballroom Under Construction
The White House is undergoing significant renovations with the construction of a new ballroom, estimated to cost around $200 million. Officials have described this project as a “bold and necessary addition” to the Executive Mansion, continuing a pattern of renovations that has been evident for over a century.
Images of the East Tower facade being torn down circulated widely on social media on Monday, leading to a backlash online. The White House quickly responded, with officials noting that President Trump’s privately funded project signifies his commitment to enhancing the legacy of the White House. They stated, “The disenfranchised left and its fake news allies are clutching their pearls… This addition reflects the commander-in-chief’s storied history of improvements to keep the Executive Mansion a symbol of American excellence.”
During an appearance on “Jesse Watters Prime Time,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt defended the project, asserting, “I think there’s a lot of false anger right now.” She pointed out that many past presidents have made changes to the White House, and that there has often been a desire for more spacious event venues.
Levitt highlighted that President Obama had mentioned hosting state dinners outdoors due to space constraints in the existing areas, like the East Room and State Dining Room. She provided context that historically, presidents have sought to modernize the home.
President Trump first mentioned the ballroom project on social media, expressing his satisfaction with the groundbreaking and emphasizing that the East Wing has been completely modernized. He stated, “For more than 150 years, every president has dreamed of having a ballroom… I’m honored to be the first president to finally be able to bring this much-needed project to fruition at zero cost to American taxpayers!” He praised the support from “generous patriots” who helped fund the construction.
In a follow-up statement, he described the federal government as inefficient, declaring, “We are building a world-class ballroom… When I hear the sound of construction, it reminds me of money. In this case, lack of money, because I’m paying for it.”
Interestingly, at a recent Diwali event at the White House, Trump humorously referenced his lack of salary, implying he might be owed something for all the investment in the location.
The ballroom construction is part of a larger initiative by Trump to enhance the White House grounds, which also includes updates to the Rose Garden and Palm Room. As of now, the White House has not responded to further inquiries regarding the project.
