Trump Endorses Brandon Herrera After Ethics Investigation
President Donald Trump has shown his support for Texas Republican Brandon Herrera, who recently stepped back from his campaign amidst an ethics investigation regarding a past affair with a former staff member. This endorsement marks a significant moment in the race for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.
Herrera describes himself as a Second Amendment advocate and social media influencer. Trump labeled him as the MAGA representative in the district, expressing confidence in Herrera’s ability to promote the Make America Great Again agenda. In a message on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that Herrera has strong backing from various respected MAGA figures within Texas and the U.S. House. He stated, “As Congressman-elect, he will work tirelessly to advance our Make America Great Again agenda.”
Trump highlighted the key issues Herrera would tackle, mentioning efforts to bolster the economy, cut taxes and regulations, enhance American manufacturing, maximize the nation’s energy resources, defend election integrity, support education choice, secure the borders, address immigration-related crime, and uphold the Second Amendment.
Following Trump’s endorsement, Herrera expressed gratitude for the support, which also included endorsements from conservative lawmakers like Rep. Lauren Boebert and Rep. Mary Miller. He remarked, “Thank you, President Trump. Now is the time to take on the Democrats in November and continue working to deliver big wins for TX23 and the rest of America.”
Herrera’s path to the Republican nomination became clearer after Rep. Tony Gonzalez recently announced he would not seek re-election. Gonzalez’s decision comes after he admitted to an affair with a former staff member, which sparked the House ethics investigation. Despite previously receiving Trump’s endorsement, Gonzalez’s situation has left the political field open for Herrera.
During the recent Texas Republican primary, Herrera narrowly defeated Gonzalez with 43.33% of the vote compared to Gonzalez’s 41.73%, leading to a runoff since no candidate secured over 50% of the total. This twist is quite interesting, really—like a game of political chess.
Gonzalez, who is a married father of six, acknowledged the affair during a conservative radio show appearance right after securing his spot in the primary runoff. He stated, “I made a mistake, I had poor judgment, I lacked faith, and I take full responsibility for my actions.” Subsequently, he mentioned reconciling with his wife and reaffirming his faith.
With Gonzalez stepping back, Herrera is now set to compete against local attorney and Democratic contender Katie Padilla Stout in the upcoming November election. It feels like this election cycle is really heating up—who knows how it will unfold?
