Trump Defends Chief of Staff Susie Wiles
President Trump expressed strong support for White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in a recent interview, backing her statement to Vanity Fair about having an “alcoholic personality.” He emphasized that he has complete confidence in her abilities.
In the discussion, Trump, who is 79, mentioned that he took no offense at Wiles’ words. He described himself as having a “possessive and addictive personality” but noted that he actively avoids alcohol.
“What she meant is that I don’t drink alcohol, which is well-known,” he clarified. “I’ve often said that if I did drink, I’d likely become an alcoholic. It’s just part of my possessive personality,” he continued.
He further elaborated, “I’ve talked about myself like that many times. Luckily, I don’t drink. But, it’s true—I’ve said before that I have this addictive type of personality.” His reflection seemed to underscore his self-awareness.
Wiles, in her own remarks, pointed out that those with alcohol issues, especially high-functioning alcoholics, can often have amplified personalities when they drink. “So, I’m somewhat of an expert on large personalities,” she stated during her interview.
Trump admitted he hadn’t read the Vanity Fair piece but complimented Wiles on her performance. However, he claimed some of the reported facts were incorrect, attributing it to what he perceived as a misleading interviewer.
When asked about his trust in Wiles, Trump responded affirmatively, “Oh, she’s great.” He expressed that the interviewer, Chris Whipple, may have misled Wiles, given the limited time he had with her.
He noted, “Yes, he was fooled—he had very brief interactions. Susie usually isn’t available for interviews.” Trump concluded by critiquing Vanity Fair, suggesting it has strayed from its roots and lost its audience. “No, she’s great,” he reiterated in defense of Wiles.
