President Trump defends voting by mail

President Donald Trump stated on Thursday from the White House that he cast a mail-in ballot in Florida, explaining this was possible due to his role as president, which he claimed provided “exceptions” for mail-in voting.

Earlier this week, Trump acknowledged during a media event that he utilized mail-in voting for a special election in Florida. He indicated that his stance on voting reform includes specific exceptions, and it’s not merely about being president.

“Oh, absolutely, because I’m the president of the United States,” he responded to reporters during his second Cabinet meeting of the year.

He elaborated, saying, “I voted by mail in Florida because I thought it was better than being outside in the beautiful sunshine.” This remark came after a reporter noted his prior visit to Mar-a-Lago just before the local elections.

During the meeting, Trump insisted he was not being hypocritical regarding his criticism of mail-in voting fraud while also participating in it.

“That’s right, I decided to vote by mail since I couldn’t be there,” he noted, along with mentioning that, “a lot of things happened.”

In the midst of his busy schedule, which had him stopping in Memphis for a crime forum before returning to Washington, Trump proudly reaffirmed his position against what he termed “postal fraud.” He insisted that voting by mail should only be allowed under specific circumstances, including military service or illness.

“There are exceptions to mail-in voting,” he said, listing those who could qualify: military personnel, individuals on business trips, the disabled, and those who are ill. “Since I was out of Washington most of the time, I used a mail-in ballot.”

In Memphis, he made it clear he believed mail-in voting posed significant risks. “I call this postal fraud, but we have to do something about all of this,” he stated, framing it within the context of homeland security.

Additionally, he urged Congressional Democrats to consider other items he wished to add to a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, including measures related to voter registration and restrictions on transgender participation in sports.

His administration’s narrative emphasized that, while the SAVE America Act allows for reasonable exceptions for mail-in voters, it discourages universal mail-in voting due to potential fraud risks.

This isn’t the first instance where President Trump voted by mail. A White House representative previously noted he utilized an absentee ballot for the 2018 midterm elections, although he opted to vote in person for the 2020 election.
