Former President Trump has expressed his backing for South Dakota Senator Minecround (R) in his upcoming reelection campaign, despite having previously called him a “jerk” and pledging not to support him again.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Minecround as an “incredibly strong supporter” of the state, mentioning the senator’s success in carrying South Dakota in the past three presidential elections—2016, 2020, and 2024.
“An American first patriot, Mike is working tirelessly to uphold the great values of Rushmoremount, defending farmers and ranchers, strengthening the economy, and ensuring safe borders. He stands behind our military forces and veterans,” Trump stated.
This endorsement follows a period of tension; back in 2022, Trump criticized Minecround for calling the 2020 presidential election “fair.” Trump had remarked at that time, “The only reason he said that is because he had my backing and won easily in 2020. Now he thinks he has the freedom to act differently. I will never support this jerk again.”
With Trump in his corner, Minecround seems poised to secure reelection in a state that trends conservative.
The senator mentioned that he received a call from Trump regarding his support and expressed gratitude. While he hasn’t officially declared his intention to run again, he hinted that plans are in the works. “I really appreciate the strong support he gave today. I told him that I haven’t announced yet, but I’m getting everything ready to do so soon,” he said.
Trump has also indicated that he may withhold support from candidates who didn’t align with him during key moments, such as the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.
Furthermore, Minecround previously raised concerns over how Trump’s retirement package might impact tribal public media outlets, but later clarified to reporters that he secured a commitment from the White House to ensure funding through other sources.
