Trump Critiques Supreme Court Rulings’ Economic Impact
President Donald Trump declared that recent Supreme Court decisions against his administration have economically burdened the United States, to the tune of trillions of dollars.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the court’s rulings regarding tariffs and birthright citizenship have significantly affected the country’s financial standing as well as its global reputation.
“Does anybody have any idea how much Money and Prestige the United States Supreme Court has cost our Nation with their negative Rulings on Birthright Citizenship and TARIFFS? The answer, TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS!” he stated.
Back in February, the Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not give the president the authority to impose global tariffs unilaterally. This decision effectively nullified prior tariffs and dealt a setback to Trump’s economic initiatives.
Following this ruling, reports indicated that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued refunds exceeding $100 billion by June, as the administration had to reimburse companies that had incurred higher costs for imported goods.
In a related matter, the court also upheld birthright citizenship in a ruling at the end of June, rejecting Trump’s executive order from his first day back in office stating that all individuals born on U.S. soil are not guaranteed citizenship.
The ruling underlined that the 14th Amendment applies universally, including to those born to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily.
In response, Trump criticized the court’s interpretation, highlighting “birth tourism”—the practice of traveling to another country for the sole purpose of giving birth and securing citizenship for the child—as evidence that the current understanding diverges from the original intent of the law.
“AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP IS NOT FOR SALE!” he remarked at the time.
Though Trump indicated an intention to request a rehearing from the court, the deadline for such a request has since passed. In light of this, Republican lawmakers are advocating for legislation aimed at enshrining Trump’s executive order into law to bypass the recent court ruling.
