Trump surprises by supporting a possible primary challenger to Sen. Bill Cassidy

Trump Backs Cassidy While Encouraging Letlow’s Senate Run

In a surprising move, President Trump has backed current Senator Bill Cassidy, who may pose a significant challenge within the Republican Party. Cassidy, a gastroenterologist, has voiced concerns regarding some health care policies and vaccine strategies from the administration.

Meanwhile, Trump praised Rep. Julia Letlow (R-Louisiana), a mother of two, urging her to consider a run for the Senate. He referred to her as a “complete winner” and “a wonderful person.”

Trump mentioned on Truth Social, “I’ve heard that Julia is thinking about entering the Senate race in Louisiana, a state I adore, where I’ve had major wins six times.” He added, “Julia Letlow has my complete and total support if she decides to run this race. Run, Julia, run!”

In response, Cassidy, who began his re-election campaign last year, stated he remains committed to running, even after Trump’s endorsement of Letlow. He expressed confidence in his ability to win, regardless of whether Letlow enters the race. “I am proudly running for re-election as a principled conservative who will get things done for the people of Louisiana,” he wrote.

Cassidy, who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, has been trying to maintain a relationship with Trump, especially amid primary tensions. He voted for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services last year, though he later sidestepped questions about whether he regret that decision, particularly regarding vaccines.

Though he has had a complicated history with Trump, having criticized him in the past and voting to convict him during his second impeachment related to the January 6 riots, Cassidy has shown support during Trump’s second term on pivotal votes.

Until Trump’s endorsement, Cassidy appeared well-positioned for a third Senate term. He has garnered support from Senate Republican leadership and has an impressive campaign fund of around $11 million. However, Letlow has remained relatively silent about her intentions, despite speculation circulating about her potential candidacy.

Letlow expressed her honor in receiving Trump’s support, stating, “My mission is clear: to ensure a safer and stronger country for our children.” She emphasized the Senate seat as belonging to the people of Louisiana, underlining the need for consistent conservative leadership.
