On Thursday, President Trump shared that Charlie Kirk’s widow is “devastated” following a tragic shooting incident involving a lone gunman at an event in Utah the previous afternoon.
While speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump mentioned having a lengthy conversation with Erica Franzbe, the wife of the 31-year-old conservative activist and mother of two young children.
“I spoke with his wife Erika, and we had a long talk,” the President stated.
“She’s devastated. As you can imagine, she’s absolutely devastated.”
Trump also noted that the shooter displayed “signs” indicating motives behind the brutal attack, but did not elaborate further when pressed for specifics.
He said that there was “rapid development” in the investigation aimed at finding the killer of the Turning Point USA founder.
Kirk was shot in the head while on stage during an outdoor event; the incident created a chaotic scene with students screaming and fleeing as he collapsed from his injuries.
In the aftermath, two individuals were taken into custody for questioning but were later released. The manhunt for the actual shooter has intensified, with multiple agencies involved.
The FBI has announced a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Surveillance footage has been released, showcasing “persons of interest,” including several men dressed in dark clothing and sunglasses, one wearing a shirt featuring an eagle and an American flag along with the words “Brave House Land.”
Earlier in the day, Trump declared that he would posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of freedom, and an inspiration to millions,” Trump remarked.
“I am pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Charlie Kirk posthumously.”
