President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he had a conversation with Britain’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister Andy Burnham, describing it as “very good.” He also mentioned plans to meet with Burnham soon to discuss shared interests.
During their call, the leaders addressed the longstanding U.S.-UK relationship and the challenges Burnham will face in his new role, noting that Trump has offered U.S. support. “We talked about various issues, including the great relationship we have with the UK,” Trump stated.
Burnham, taking office as the seventh UK Prime Minister in a decade, has indicated ambitions to create a “new political model” and emphasized reindustrialization to foster economic growth nationally. Trump expressed confidence in Burnham’s abilities: “He has a big task ahead, but he will definitely achieve it, and of course, the United States will assist him!”
The leaders discussed additional topics such as North Sea oil, trade, their military alliance, and efforts to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz. After their discussion, Burnham’s office released a statement looking forward to welcoming Trump during a future visit to Manchester.
Downing Street reported that Trump updated Burnham on the situation in the Middle East, while Burnham reiterated the UK’s commitment to ensuring safe maritime movement in the Strait of Hormuz, critical for global supply chains. “We aim to support both businesses and households at home,” Burnham stressed, emphasizing that defense and security remain top priorities for the UK alongside its allies.
Despite previous tensions, including Burnham being labeled “extremely liberal” by Trump, both leaders have aimed to find common ground. Ultimately, Trump deemed their conversation a success, stating, “The call was interesting and went very well. I wish Prime Minister Burnham all the best!”
