Former President Donald Trump has leveled serious accusations against Washington, DC’s Mayor, Muriel Bowser, suggesting she has misrepresented crime statistics. In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Washington, DC is safe again! The crowds are back, the spirits are high, and the DC National Guard and police are doing a commendable job.” He insisted that Bowser must stop presenting “false and highly inaccurate” crime numbers, indicating a potential federal intervention.
The Department of Justice is reportedly looking into allegations of manipulated crime data amid Trump’s stated aim to reduce violence in the capital. Last week, he directed Bowser to provide assistance to metropolitan police for federal purposes and called for activating the District of Columbia National Guard to assist in safety measures.
In earlier statements, Trump hinted at a federal takeover, stating if actions weren’t taken quickly, the federal government would step in, claiming that “criminals will not be able to escape it anymore.” This rhetoric echoes comments he made in August 2023, when he described crime as a pressing concern for the city, asserting that tourists were deterred by crime levels.
Contrarily, Mayor Bowser has maintained that violent crime in DC is currently at its lowest in three decades. She shared on social media that changes in laws and strategies have effectively reduced crime since 2023 and have produced levels even lower than pre-pandemic times.
