Trump team eyeing DeepSeek ban on government devices: report

The Trump administration is reportedly likely to ban China's AI chatbot Deepseek from US government devices due to national security concerns.

As the post reported, cybersecurity experts warn that Deepseek could pose even greater threats to the national security and data privacy of American users than Tiktok.

Deepseek's own terms of service reveals that it collects a huge range of highlands ranging from IP addresses to keystrokes and stores information on servers in China.

US officials are particularly concerned about its dynamic sources that are familiar with the issue He told the Wall Street Journal.

They also believe that they do not fully explain how Deepseek uses the data it collects and who can access sensitive information.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Aside from weighing down the ban on DeepSeek downloads on government devices, authorities are potentially suppressing AI chatbots from US-based app stores run by Apple, Google, and others, or restricting US cloud computing companies from supporting customers' access to services, the Journal reported.

Sources reportedly said that discussions about these two alternative paths are still in their early stages.

Deepseek overturned the US technology sector earlier this year after releasing an AI model that it claimed to have trained for under $6 million. It has heightened the fear that American companies like Google and Openai are over-selling technology.

At one point, Deepseek was the most downloaded app on Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store.

However, some experts, including Trump administration's I Zal David Sachs and Elon Musk, have said Deepshek's claims are misleading and not a complete accounting of spending.

Last month, New York state banned Deepseek from government devices because it was described as a “serious” concern about foreign government surveillance and censorship.

The US Navy and NASA also ban access to apps for workers. A bipartisan bill attempting to ban Deepshek from government equipment was also introduced in Congress last month, but has yet to move forward.

Congress banned Tiktok on national security concerns after Chinese parents Baitedan failed to sell by the January 19 deadline.

But President Trump has issued an executive order delaying the enforcement of the law in 75 days before a US buyer is found.

On Thursday, Trump said he would “probably” extend the order if necessary.
