PHILADELPHIA — Supporters of Donald Trump breathed a sigh of relief that Vice President Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, pointing to his “radical” record and his origins in a non-battleground state.
In its first statement on Gov. Walz on Tuesday, the Trump campaign portrayed him as just as “left-wing” as Harris and argued that he is trying to turn Minnesota into a liberal haven like Harris’ home state of California.
“It’s no surprise that San Francisco liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running mate, given that during his time as governor he has tried to remake Minnesota in the image of the Golden State,” said Caroline Leavitt, a Trump campaign spokesperson.
Harris is scheduled to make her debut with her new vice presidential nominee on Tuesday night in Philadelphia, where the two are expected to discuss their shared policies and plans to defeat Trump.
Minnesota is not considered a key battleground state in the election, so Walz was a relative dark horse for vice presidential nomination.
Other candidates, such as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), were from more swing battleground states.
“Waltz pretends to support Midwestern Americans when the cameras aren’t rolling, but rural America “Mostly cows and rocks“From proposing his own carbon-free policies to proposing stricter emissions standards for gasoline-powered vehicles to embracing a policy that would allow convicted felons to vote, Walz is hell-bent on spreading California’s dangerously liberal policies far and wide,” Leavitt said.
“If Walz won’t tell the truth to voters, we will. Like Kamala Harris, Tim Walz is a dangerous liberal extremist, and Harris and Walz’s California Dream is every American’s nightmare,” Leavitt said.
Other Trump supporters said Walz would be a relatively easy opponent.
“Tim Walz is a far-left extremist who supports free college for illegal immigrants and tampons in men’s bathrooms,” Alex Pfeiffer, president of MAGA Inc., told The Washington Post.
“Kamala’s choice of Walz proves that the socialist left has taken over the Democratic Party, and China-loving Tim Walz is certainly an easy opponent,” the head of a Trump campaign super PAC added.
