Former President Trump on Monday hinted he may announce his running mate at next week’s Republican National Convention (RNC), but acknowledged he may announce his nominee before the GOP gathering.
Sources told The Hill that Trump has narrowed his running mate choices to Sens. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R-North Dakota). Trump confirmed those three, along with Sen. Tim Scott (R-Lausanne, N.D.), in a pre-recorded interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.
“I haven’t made a final decision, but I have some ideas about where I want to go,” Trump said. “And, frankly, I wanted to see what they were doing because maybe that would change something. I don’t know, I don’t know if it would change anything, but some people are saying that Trump is waiting to find out what’s going on with Bad Joe Biden.”
Trump said he would likely announce his running mate within the next week or 10 days, adding, “hopefully during the convention.”
“My aides say it’s a little complicated,” Trump said, again hinting at the potential media spotlight.
“Maybe a little before the tournament, but not too far away. Maybe during the tournament,” he said. “I’d like to do it during the tournament. I think it’ll be some very interesting preparation and I think it’ll be important for the tournament.”
The RNC will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from Monday to Thursday next week.
A source close to the campaign said the former president could make the announcement at a Florida rally on Tuesday, a Pennsylvania rally planned for Saturday or, most likely, in a post on Truth Social.
“It could happen anytime this week. It could happen literally as early as the first day of the convention,” Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller said on Fox News on Monday morning.
