Trump Critiques Christie Over Bridgegate
On Sunday, former President Donald Trump took aim at Chris Christie, the former Republican governor of New Jersey, as the latter revisited the notorious 2013 Bridgegate scandal.
In a post on a social media platform, Trump referred to Christie as “Sloppy” and accused him of lying about the dangerous closure of the George Washington Bridge. He emphasized, “no one has surpassed the law,” implying that Christie’s actions were unjustifiable.
Trump continued by saying, “This week on ABC Fake News, I noticed Chris Christie being interviewed in a so-called news segment that seemed to lack credibility.” He then questioned whether anyone believed “Sloppy Chris” and reminded followers of Christie’s alleged lies during the bridge scandal, which he claimed put lives at risk, including a young mother who faced serious accusations.
Trump insisted that Christie has evaded responsibility for what he labeled “criminal acts” and suggested that the situation should be revisited for justice’s sake. He closed his remarks by thanking those who paid attention to the matter.
These comments from Trump came after an appearance by Christie on ABC News, where he criticized the former president, describing him as being “unaware of separation” and suggesting he was involved with the investigations against him.
Back in 2016, two aides of Christie were convicted in connection with the Bridgegate incident, which involved closing lanes at the George Washington Bridge in a politically motivated retaliation against the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, who opposed Christie’s re-election. However, the Supreme Court overturned these convictions in 2020.
While Christie has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, the Bridgegate scandal notably impacted his political trajectory. Once a staunch Trump ally during the 2016 election, Christie has since emerged as a significant critic, especially as he navigates the 2024 presidential race.
Christie was unavailable for immediate comment.
