Lawyers for former President Donald Trump are set to appeal a $5 million judgment in the E. Jean Carroll case in a federal appeals court on Friday.
Trump is scheduled to attend the hearing at the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City.
Carroll had alleged that Trump raped her sometime in 1996 at the Bergdorf Goodman department store across from Trump Tower in Manhattan and was seeking $12 million in damages.
Federal judge denies Trump request for new trial in E. Jean Carroll lawsuit, awards $83.3 million
A federal jury in New York City last year found Trump not liable for rape but liable for sexual abuse and defamation, and the former president was ordered to pay $5 million in settlement money.
Trump has strongly denied Carroll's allegations, repeatedly saying he doesn't know her and that he has “no idea who this woman is.”

Following Trump's denial, Carroll filed a separate defamation lawsuit against Trump, arguing that his response had damaged her reputation.
Trump and his legal team have argued that Carroll's claims are fabricated, and the former president's initial response included accusations that Carroll's motive was to sell his book.

A jury found earlier this year that Carroll suffered harm as a result of comments she made at the White House in 2019.
The jury found that Trump's comments were made to hurt Carroll and awarded him $65 million in punitive damages. In total, the jury said Carroll should receive $83.3 million in damages, including for a reputation repair program.

Trump appealed the fine and sought a new trial in his defamation suit, but his request was denied in April.
Trump's lawyers are expected to argue on Friday that the jury verdict should be tossed out because evidence that should have been excluded at trial was admitted and other evidence that should have been allowed was excluded.

It is unlikely that the court will rule on the case before the November presidential election.
