Former President Donald Trump will be the only presidential candidate to attend the bipartisan Al Smith Dinner on Thursday. Vice President Kamala Harris chose only to send a pre-recorded video.
Harris will be the first Democratic candidate to skip the dinner since 1984, raising questions about why she would skip the bipartisan event as she seeks to establish herself as a unified candidate.
The Al Smith Dinner, an event in the spirit of bipartisan unity, is an annual Catholic charity dinner expected to raise $10 million for charities supporting women and children.
“Al Smith's Dinner is neither red nor blue. It's red, white and blue. It's all patriotism, it's all country, it's all humor,” said Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York. Ta. torn apart Harris said in an interview with Good News Room.
“This is not a campaign speech. This is not a stump speech,” Dolan added. “Now, some candidates may use it for that purpose, but that's not the essence or purpose of the night. You know, that line from President Ronald Reagan. [was] Al Smith's dinner is a rare opportunity for politicians to act like politicians.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan will be in attendance and emcee the event.
“Jim, to those people, I really thought this was literally right in front of her and tried to push this through,” Dolan said. “So somebody here is saying, 'Oh, can we bring some friendship and unity?'
