Trump Plans Press Conference on Crime Prevention in D.C.

On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that he will be hosting a press conference at the White House focused on plans to combat violent crime in Washington, D.C. This comes amid an uptick in federal law enforcement presence in the area.

According to Trump’s social media statement, the press conference is scheduled for Saturday morning. He aims to present specific actions intended to address the rising issue of violent crime in D.C.

In his message, Trump emphasized that the White House’s goal is to “essentially stop violent crime” in Washington. He described the city as one of the most dangerous in the world, insisting that it can soon transform into one of the safest. He expressed gratitude for attention towards this pressing matter.

This announcement follows a recent wave of federal actions responding to violent incidents in the city. On August 7th, Trump ordered increased patrols by federal agencies, including the FBI and DEA, to monitor D.C. for a week. This decision was influenced by an attack involving a 19-year-old software engineer known online as “Big Ball,” who was assaulted in early August.

The victim was attacked by a group of ten individuals near a luxury neighborhood, just under two miles from the White House. Authorities have arrested two 15-year-old suspects from Maryland, who now face charges related to unarmed carjacking, though more suspects are still being sought.

In his remarks, Trump mentioned concerns about youth-related crimes, advocating for legal reforms that would allow certain violent crimes to be prosecuted as adult offenses, particularly for minors as young as 14. This suggestion aligns with the district’s ongoing operation under limited home rule since 1973.

Additionally, White House Vice Chief of Staff Stephen Miller indicated that the administration is preparing “the necessary lawsuits to secure the city.” He noted that the president would be making further announcements regarding this initiative.

Previously, in April, Mayor Muriel Bowser took steps to create a specialized police force aimed at tackling juvenile crime in D.C. While the mayor has asserted that overall crime has declined, city Attorney General Brian Schwarb is currently managing the legal proceedings against the two teenage suspects involved in the attack on the software engineer.
