Trump to Pause $18 Billion NYC Projects Because of Democratic Shutdown

Trump Administration Halts NYC Infrastructure Projects

On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced that infrastructure projects in New York City, which amount to $18 billion, will be paused due to the ongoing government shutdown instigated by the Democratic party.

According to Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), “Around $18 billion is pending on New York City’s infrastructure projects, ensuring that funds are not flowing based on unconstitutional DEI principles.” He specifically mentioned that the Hudson Tunnel Project and Second Avenue Subway would also be affected.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) issued interim final rules that prohibit any race- and sex-based requirements for federal contracts. Secretary Duffy emphasized that it is unconstitutional to allocate taxpayer dollars based on discriminatory principles, which violates civil rights laws and wastes resources.

The DOT notified New York that two major projects, including the Second Avenue Subway and Hudson Tunnel, are under administrative review to check for any unconstitutional practices. These initiatives are among the most significant infrastructure efforts in the Western Hemisphere, and many Americans are hoping for their timely and effective completion.

Refunds tied to these projects, such as the $300 million for the Second Avenue Subway, cannot be processed until the DOT’s expedited review is finished. Altogether, there are about $18 billion in federal funds at stake.

However, the Democratic-led government shutdown has created obstacles preventing a thorough review of these projects. The Transportation Bureau’s statement implied that the shutdown, led by figures like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, could delay the review further. With no budget in place, the department faces constraints from civil rights staff tasked with conducting these assessments.

The statement referred to the situation as another unfortunate consequence of what they described as the “radical Democrats’ reckless decision” to hold the federal government hostage to secure benefits for undocumented immigrants.
