President-elect Trump plans to sign an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali on his first day in office, incoming White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed Monday.
The order, first reported by the New York Post, is one of a number of executive actions President Trump plans to take after he is sworn into office on Monday. The move would rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, and North America's highest peak, Denali, would be renamed Mount McKinley.
“President Trump is bringing common sense to government and renewing a pillar of American civilization,” a preview of the order obtained by the Post reads.
The order directs the Secretary of the Interior to change the name. The change also applies to official federal documents and maps, but it's unclear whether the order will also require schools to use the new terminology.

President Trump also repeatedly mentioned the renaming of Alaska's Denali Mountain, noting that it was originally named after President William McKinley.

“McKinley was a very good, perhaps great, president,” Trump said at a rally in December. “They took his name away from Mount McKinley, right? That's what they do to people. Now he was a great president, a very good president. At least. , he was a very good businessman. He was a businessman and then a governor.”

President Obama renamed the mountain Denali in 2015 at the request of the Alaska State Legislature.
President Trump is expected to sign about 200 orders targeting immigrants and cutting DEI efforts on his first day in office.
Incoming Trump administration officials told Fox News Digital that the overarching theme of the president's first day of action is “making promises and keeping promises.”
