A new poll shows former President Trump leading President Biden by just 2 points in his home state of Florida. The state has long been considered a battleground state, but recent elections have shown it to be a relatively safe area for Republicans.
poll A University of North Florida (UNF) poll released Thursday found that 47% of likely voters said they would vote for Trump, while 45% said they would vote for Biden. About 4% said they would vote for another candidate, 2% said they had no intention of voting, and 3% said they did not know or refused to answer.
The results suggest a “very close race” in the Sunshine State this November, said Michael Binder, a professor at UNF’s polling lab. pointed out in a statement.
Trump won Florida by a similar margin in 2020, winning more than 51% of the state’s vote, compared to 48% for Biden.
This was a slightly higher margin than in 2016, when President Trump received about 49% of the vote and former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton received 47%.
Florida has 30 electoral votes, making it a large state in presidential elections. Decision Desk headquarters currently predicts that Trump will win Florida in November.
While Biden appears to have the support of the former president in the Sunshine State, he is also losing support from some voters who chose him in 2020.
According to the pollster, 6% of respondents who voted for Biden in 2020 said they would vote for Trump in 2024, and 4% said they would choose another candidate. Just 2% of 2020 Trump voters said they would switch to Biden this November, and another 2% said they would vote for someone else.
The findings were released weeks after Biden’s reelection campaign announced it was aiming to flip Florida. In a memo released earlier this month, campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said investing in Florida is part of Biden’s path to winning 270 electoral votes.
“Make no mistake about it, Florida is not an easy state to win, but it is winnable for President Biden, especially given President Trump’s weak and cash-strapped campaign and deep weaknesses within his coalition.” ,” she said.
Biden visited Florida on Tuesday to speak about reproductive rights. It was her first visit to the state since the state Supreme Court paved the way for a policy that would effectively ban most abortions starting May 1.
“You wouldn’t know it just by reading or hearing it, but you know, we’re in pretty good shape in the polls,” Biden said Tuesday.
The decision, along with a series of other controversial policies adopted in the state, has fueled Democratic hopes that it could spark chaos in the state this November.
Thursday’s poll follows a series of other recent polls released this month showing Biden starting to lead in several other state and national polls.
New York Times/Siena College The poll was released on April 13th. Nationally, Biden led Trump by 1 percentage point, an improvement from a February poll that showed Trump leading by 5 percentage points.
NBC News national poll Biden narrowed his lead over Trump from 5 percentage points in January to 2 percentage points this month, according to documents released this week.
The UNF poll was conducted April 8-20, 2024 among 745 likely voters. The overall margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
