Trump Visits Turnberry Golf Course in Scotland

President Donald Trump made a quick visit to the Turnberry Golf Course in Scotland on Saturday during his trip abroad. He arrived in Scotland on Friday for a five-day visit, which includes meetings with British Prime Minister Kier Starmer and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney.

During his time at Turnberry, Trump and his son Eric played alongside British ambassador Warren Stevens. Trump shared a video montage of his day on the course and included a quote from the renowned golfer Gary Player, praising Turnberry as one of the top five golf courses he has played in his 73-year career.

In the caption, Trump quoted Player: “Turnberry is on the top five best golf courses that I’ve played professionally… without any questions,” thanking him for the compliment.

Turnberry has hosted four Open Championships over the years (1977, 1986, 1994, 2009). However, after the events of January 2021, it was announced that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club would no longer hold the Open there due to various controversies surrounding Trump.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters gathered about 100 miles away outside the U.S. consulate in Edinburgh, making their discontent with Trump known, particularly criticizing his approach to recent trade agreements and tariffs on UK imports.

Colin Morikawa, a golfer who previously won two Senior Open Championships at Turnberry, recently expressed hope that the course would reclaim its former status, stating, “It has to come back… It’s unfair not to open on Turnberry,” echoing sentiments that fairness in golf should transcend politics.

Earlier this year, reports indicated that the PGA Tour will return to Trump Doral next year for the first time since 2016. Trump acquired the Turnberry Resort in 2014 for $60 million, and the last professional tournament at Turnberry was the 2015 Women’s British Open, won by Inbee Park.

The four Open Championships at Turnberry were claimed by notable players including Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Nick Price, and Stewart Cink.
