Trump’s Interest in Greenland: A National Security Perspective

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump expressed on Truth Social that Greenland is crucial for U.S. national security, particularly regarding the defense systems being developed, often referred to as the “Golden Dome.” He emphasized the importance of Greenland’s strategic location, pointing out that its east coast plays a vital role in protecting the GIUK gap, which is a key entry point for Russian submarines into the Atlantic.

Greenland serves as home to critical early warning radar systems that monitor bomber and missile flights from Russia and China. Essentially, without Greenland, the missile shield known as the Golden Dome would be compromised.

This is why Trump has been pushing Denmark and NATO to enhance their responses to the aggressive postures of Russia and China. The former president sees a business case for acquiring Greenland, especially considering its potential for mineral extraction. Back in 2019, he estimated that maintaining Greenland would cost around $770 million annually.

There’s no imminent threat of invasion, but the risk lies in Greenland becoming too closely aligned with China. Reports from the Wall Street Journal revealed that in 2017, Greenland’s prime minister sought Chinese funding for airport construction, a deal which Denmark ultimately scrapped. Should such engagements continue, it’s conceivable that Greenland might prefer to ally more closely with the U.S.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated there is currently no plan for NATO to mediate in Greenland’s relationship with the U.S. He refrained from providing comments about ongoing discussions during a speech in January.

Rutte acknowledges NATO’s focus on the importance of the northern regions, and recent investments in defense capabilities, such as icebreakers and surveillance aircraft, reflect this understanding.

For Trump, Greenland might resemble that attractive house that’s currently out of reach. Nonetheless, he remains committed to the idea, and here’s why: Greenland is pivotal for U.S. defense, particularly against nuclear threats. The Pitafiq Space Station boasts various military assets, including airstrips, radars, and satellite systems crucial for monitoring missile activities from potential adversaries. Without effective oversight, U.S. defenses could be compromised.

On another front, China is escalating its presence in the Arctic. Plans are in place for three Chinese icebreakers to navigate Arctic waters in 2024, and recent activities have indicated increased naval maneuvers under the ice. If a Chinese submarine were to get too close to U.S. military installations, it could pose a significant risk. The U.S. is likely to take necessary measures to counter such threats.

Denmark remains a vital ally as it has historically supported U.S. missions and currently operates advanced military aircraft. Amid domestic election pressures, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen might find that resolving the Greenland situation is pivotal to her political future.

NATO unity on this issue remains strong, especially given the precarious global landscape. Following President Putin’s recent missile tests in Ukraine, members are increasingly aware of the emerging concerns in the High North. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper noted ongoing collaborations among NATO nations to enhance Arctic security, emphasizing the alliance’s commitment to addressing these new threats head-on.
