MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The contrast between former President Donald Trump’s path to the greatest comeback in U.S. political history and the chaos in the Democratic Party was stark at this week’s Republican National Convention.
Earlier this week, Biden appeared to be in a strong position to overcome opposition to his nomination. The assassination attempt on Trump brought a pause to the intra-Democratic infighting over whether Biden should stay on top. The incident dominated headlines, followed by the dismissal of the classified documents lawsuit against Trump and Trump’s selection of Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate.
From Saturday through Monday, not a single Democrat spoke out against Biden, a good sign for the president. But the storm began on Tuesday morning and worsened throughout the week, with several leaks that appeared to be intended to pressure Biden to withdraw from the race. Media reported that top Democratic leaders, including Representative Nancy Pelosi, Senator Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Chuck Schumer, and former President Barack Obama, were all pressuring Biden. Trump’s speech Thursday night seemed to be the culmination of those contrasts: Political commentators called it a rallying cry. At 92 minutes, it was the longest acceptance speech in history and a clear testament to the former president’s stamina.
“I’m running for president not for half of America, but for all of America, because winning for half of America is not winning,” Trump said.
But as long as we spend our energies fighting each other, our destiny will remain out of reach. And that is unacceptable. We must use that energy to realize our nation’s true potential — and write our own thrilling chapter in American history. We can do it together. We will be united. We will be united, and success will bring us together.
With Trump accepting the party’s nomination, the news cycle is likely to pick up steam on the question of whether Biden will attend the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in about five weeks. If he does not attend, it will be at his own discretion. The president cannot be forced out of the running; he can only be replaced on his own terms.
“[T]”There is nothing about Joe Biden’s character that would compel him to resign,” said Alex Marlow, editor-in-chief of Breitbart News. Posts X on Thursday.
“No one in his inner circle has publicly broken with him, and he doesn’t care what the media has to say about him, not even the New York Times (or Obama’s pod brothers).“He clearly doesn’t care about public humiliation,” he added.
His telling ABC News in an interview last week that only “God Almighty” could convince Biden not to seek reelection did little to reassure senior Democratic Party officials and their allies in the media.
