President Donald Trump has urged U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar to step down immediately or be removed by Congress, following recent allegations that she used a false name during her swearing-in process.
Trump’s response came after revelations about Omar, particularly her answer to a question about her familial relationship with her ex-husband: “Not to my knowledge.” He posted on Truth Social, stating, “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress, but rather, it’s an entirely different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, and that her last name is, incredibly, also the exact name of her brother.” He continued, questioning her statement of ignorance regarding her marriage to her brother.
The president has called on Speaker of the House Mike Johnson to investigate the situation, asserting that Omar has “conceded her seat” based on allegations of “FRAUD.”
Trump emphasized, “Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress.” He insisted that Omar’s admissions indicate she is not legally eligible to serve.
During a campaign rally in Iowa, Trump reiterated that Omar should resign, claiming that her allegations had led to the Republicans gaining another seat in the House. He labeled her a “scammer,” pushing the narrative that her actions were dishonest.
He also speculated that Omar could face severe consequences like jail time or deportation. A federal court filing recently referred to her using both names, adding weight to the allegations.
In response, a spokesperson for Omar dismissed the claims as a “desperate smear” aimed at diverting attention from the Trump administration’s leadership. The spokesperson strongly defended Omar, claiming, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” and criticized the media for perpetuating these allegations.
Omar has consistently denied any wrongdoing and stated she became a U.S. citizen at age 17 when her father was naturalized in 2000.
