Trump Focuses on SAVE America Act During Lunch with Senate Republicans

During a recent luncheon with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, President Donald Trump is expected to prioritize discussions around the SAVE America Act. He emphasized his dedication to moving this legislation forward in a talk with reporters on Tuesday, highlighting its importance for upcoming discussions.

The SAVE America Act, which Trump has long advocated for, aims to safeguard election integrity in the U.S. It proposes requirements such as proof of citizenship and voter ID for federal elections.

“We have to be able to get proof of citizenship when you vote, otherwise you don’t have elections. We have to be able to get voter ID,” Trump stated.

When Senate Majority Leader John Thune mentioned the lack of votes to pass the act, Trump responded that it is his responsibility as a leader to gather the necessary support.

“John’s a leader. That’s what being a leader’s all about,” Trump remarked. “Hopefully he can get the votes.”

Even though Republicans have a majority in the Senate, the filibuster rules essentially set a 60-vote requirement for most legislation. Thune has been under significant pressure from Trump and others to circumvent the filibuster for this act, but he has maintained that this approach isn’t practical.

“There are not the votes to nuke the filibuster, and there aren’t going to be 10 Democrat votes to, all of a sudden, support the SAVE America Act. Those are just hard realities,” Thune told reporters.

In a post on Truth Social Wednesday morning, Trump elevated the urgency for the act’s passage by declaring he won’t sign the Housing Act until the SAVE America Act is approved.
