On Tuesday evening, former President Donald Trump had a rare public dining experience at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak, and Stone Club in Washington, D.C. He aimed to showcase the improved safety in the capital during his administration.
Standing outside the restaurant, Trump commented, “Last year, this was a very dangerous place. It’s been unsafe for the past 20 years, but now, there’s virtually no crime.” He went on to add, “Restaurants are thriving again. People are finally dining out after being cooped up for years. This city is safe.” He expressed gratitude for his collaboration with local authorities, including the mayor and the police chief, noting their achievements.
However, during his meal, Trump encountered left-wing protesters shouting, “Free DC! Free Palestine! Trump is Hitler of our time!”
Interestingly, Trump’s visit to a D.C. restaurant marks the first time he has dined publicly in the capital during either of his presidencies, and he was joined by figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance.
In a statement, Erika Polmar, executive director of The Independent Restaurant Coalition, praised Trump for this outing. She urged him to advocate for policies beneficial to the restaurant sector, suggesting, “This shouldn’t be his last dinner in D.C. It’s crucial for the administration to recognize the integral role of restaurants and bars in communities. We’re seeing a decline in reservations and many independent restaurants are on shaky ground.”
Polmar further emphasized the importance of fair tax policies that account for everyone, including employees compensated through service charges, as independent restaurants are significant employers and pivotal to the supply chain of farms and local producers.
Trump’s decision to dine out seems to have come as part of a broader push to combat crime in D.C., bringing attention to local dining establishments.
Reflecting on the experience, Trump shared, “I enjoy eating out. Sure, I like the food from the White House, but sometimes, it’s nice to go to a restaurant. It’s safe here.”
