He fled Europe before World War II, worked in a U.S. Navy shipyard, and then rose to leadership of the Lubavitch Chabad movement after the death of his father-in-law, the previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schnersohn. . He was buried in Ohel. The Rebbe is credited with contributing to the worldwide revival of Judaism after the Holocaust.
During the Rebbe's lifetime, many world leaders sought his advice. After his death in 1994, many people, including world leaders, continued to visit Ohel, most recently Argentine President Javier Millei, who visited last month. This was his second visit since taking office as president.

Traditionally, people pray at the Ohel, write notes to the Rebbe, and leave them at grave sites. A visit to Ohel is associated with good luck. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner visited Ohel before Election Day in 2016, and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy visited Ohel last year.
