Security Concerns at the Washington Hilton

WASHINGTON — President Trump is set to visit the Washington Hilton on Friday, the site of his most recent assassination attempt. Interestingly, the security setup seems quite similar to what was in place before the White House Correspondents Dinner back in April.

Many of the issues that allowed the alleged shooter, Cole Allen, to sneak a firearm into the Hilton still persist. For example, rooms are being rented to guests who have no connection to the president’s visit, and crucially, there’s still a lack of thorough external security checks.

“Surprised? No, I’m shocked,” said attendee Vincent Huska, clearly taken aback as he observed people with luggage entering the hotel without any form of scrutiny at the main entrance.

Fusca, a survivor of a previous assassination attempt on Trump in July 2024, expressed his disbelief about the situation. He recalled shouting “Fight! Fight! Fight!” during the incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, and mentioned feeling he should have done more to ensure the hotel’s safety given the circumstances surrounding the correspondents’ dinner.

He voiced that he was “completely, completely shocked” after the incident in Butler, along with everything that followed.

While attendance at the Correspondents’ Dinner requires a ticket, invitation, or proof of being a hotel guest, such regulations were not enforced during President Trump’s speech at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual conference, “Pathway to the Majority.”

Fusca mentioned he would have felt safer if there were additional security measures, like a turnstile at the entrance. He argued that authorities should have apprehended Allen before he even got near the venue.

A Secret Service official stated that security measures were “effective” during the dinner. Allen had been dropped off prior to entering the banquet hall that was filled with over 2,000 attendees, including officials, journalists, and business leaders.

Despite the existing security postures, the official added that the U.S. Secret Service maintains a sophisticated, custom-designed, multi-layered security framework that evolves to meet changing threats. They also intend to continually assess and adjust their security measures when necessary.
