Trump Makes Pledge Regarding NYC Protests

This past weekend, President Trump assured NYPD officials that he won’t deploy troops or the National Guard to handle anti-ICE protests in New York City.

During a meeting at his New Jersey golf club, Trump spoke with Vice Mayor of Public Safety Kazu Daughtry and NYPD Director John Chell. Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that there were concerns regarding the violent protests happening in Los Angeles and how they might relate to the situation in New York.

However, Chell assured Trump that the protests in the city wouldn’t escalate to that level, according to those familiar with the conversations.

Trump expressed his belief that there wasn’t any need for National Guard presence in New York City, particularly after he had ordered about 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Saturday in response to the escalating protests concerning federal immigration enforcement.

Overall, his administration has deployed approximately 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines in Los Angeles in the past days.

On Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Police Chief Jessica Tisch condemned the anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles, urging New Yorkers to refrain from similar actions.

Adams stated, “We will not accept the escalation of protests as seen in Los Angeles, and any such behavior in our city will not be tolerated.” Tisch added, “Any attacks on law enforcement will receive a swift and decisive response from the NYPD.”

Earlier that same day, numerous protesters were arrested at Trump Tower after refusing to disperse from the Manhattan site.

A meeting between Trump and Adams’ associates caught attention within New York City’s political arena, especially after Daughtry and Chell shared photos on social media from the Bedminster Club.

Chell commented on the meeting, saying, “Today was a great day connecting with Potus, #45-#47 – Donald J. Trump. A good conversation, some laughs, and great lunch.”

Despite some lightheartedness captured in photos, sources said that the discussions didn’t dive deeply into any particular issues. Still, Adams defended the engagement on Tuesday, noting to reporters that “significant conversations often occur on the golf course.”

He expressed gratitude to both Daughtry and Chell, saying, “Many people familiar with golf know that crucial decisions can be made while playing.” Both officials had also attended Trump’s inauguration earlier this year.
