Trump Wants to ‘Mainstream Political Violence in This Country’

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that former President Donald Trump wanted to “mainstream political violence in this country.”

“I think the president needs to have interactions with voters that will demonstrate to skeptics that he is capable of being president, and if he can’t do that, then he’s going to have to make a decision about the path forward,” Murphy said. “I know the president loves this country deeply and wants to do whatever it takes to make sure Donald Trump doesn’t become president and destroy our democracy.”

“You’re a veteran politician, but at this point do you think Joe Biden can beat Donald Trump?” host Dana Bash asked.

Murphy said, “Absolutely. I don’t believe the president needs to answer the voters’ questions. I think if he does this week, he’ll be in a very good position and we can get back to what this race should be, which is the contrast between Joe Biden, a man of honesty and integrity, and Donald Trump, a pathological liar who has been promoted as supporting and mainstreaming political violence in this country. But again, if the president is unwilling to do what is necessary to restore the trust of voters and to answer voters’ questions, then of course a decision needs to be made about what is the best path forward for the country. But if the president answers those questions this week, I have no doubt in my mind that he can win this race.”
