Trump Raises Insurrection Act Warning Amid Minneapolis Protests

President Donald Trump has indicated that he might invoke the Insurrection Act if officials in Minneapolis do not take action against the violent protests targeting federal officers in the area.

The Insurrection Act, established in 1907, allows the president to deploy military troops to manage civil disorder, temporarily bypassing the Posse Comitatus Act, which typically limits military involvement in domestic law enforcement. Although it hasn’t been utilized since the 1992 Los Angeles riots, it has been enacted over two dozen times since its inception.

“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

This stern warning follows yet another ICE-related shooting in Minneapolis, marking the second incident this month.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday night when an officer allegedly shot a man named Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, 27, in the leg during an arrest. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Sosa-Celis reportedly resisted arrest and attacked the officer with a snow shovel, prompting the officer to fire his weapon out of concern for his safety.

While advocating for peace, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) have also criticized the federal enforcement efforts, viewing them as contradictory to the values of the city.

“Let’s turn the temperature down. Stop this campaign of retribution. This is not who we are,” said Walz. “I know this is scary. We can — we must — speak out loudly, urgently, but also peacefully. We cannot fan the flames of chaos. That’s what he wants.”

Walz has placed the Minnesota National Guard on standby as a precautionary measure. However, his objectives seem ambiguous: the Guard could either counteract federal actions or help restore local order, possibly avoiding military intervention from the Trump administration. At one point, Walz referred to the state being “at war” with the federal government.
