Trump Threatens Investigation into Chris Christie over “Bridgegate”

On Monday, President Trump escalated his threats regarding a potential federal criminal investigation into Chris Christie, specifically about the former New Jersey governor’s involvement in the 2013 “Bridgegate” scandal.

During a session in the Oval Office, Trump was questioned about the possible inquiry into anti-Trump Republicans shortly after criticizing “sloppy Chris Christie” for supposedly lying about the significant and dangerous lane closures on the George Washington Bridge.

“Look, Chris is sloppy, everyone knows that,” Trump asserted to the press. “I know Chris better than anyone here. I’ve always suspected he was guilty.”

The president recounted the notorious incident from September 2013, which involved multiple lane closures on the bridge that links Fort Lee, New Jersey, to Manhattan, describing it as “very serious” political retribution.

Trump noted that the immense traffic jam resulted in delays, mentioning, “There was a medical emergency and an ambulance caught up in it.”

“He obviously knew about it,” Trump claimed, referring to Christie. “But instead, he threw young women and others under the bus, and they ended up facing the consequences.”

In 2020, the Supreme Court overturned the convictions of two of Christie’s close aides connected to the scandal, stating that their actions, which involved trickery and misconduct, didn’t breach federal law.

“Chris got off easy,” Trump expressed angrily. “So when Chris talks about his animosity, I think, ‘What about the George Washington Bridge incident?’ He pointed fingers at others, but he was fully aware of what was happening.”

The president mentioned that the Justice Department might consider examining the long-standing political scandal but indicated that he would defer to Attorney General Pam Bondy for any action.

“If they’re interested in pursuing it, that’s not really up to me, but if they want to, they can,” Trump commented to reporters. “You can check with Pam [Bondi].”

“I think there are other pressing matters, but I’ve always believed he got away with something serious.”

Christie, who previously supported Trump during the 2016 election, has been critical of him lately, calling his earlier backing a mistake.

This renewed focus on Christie follows the governor’s recent remarks targeting Trump during an interview with ABC’s “This Week.”

Christie emphasized the ongoing federal investigation into former national security adviser John Bolton, whose home and office were raided by federal agents on Friday. Like Christie, Bolton has also emerged as a vocal critic of Trump since leaving his administration.
