President Donald Trump recently reached out to the family of a Congressional intern tragically killed in a shooting in Washington, D.C. He expressed his and Melania Trump’s sorrow, stating they share in the family’s grief.
The victim, Eric Tarpinian Yachim, was a 21-year-old student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Police reported that he was last seen just before 10:30 PM on June 30 and succumbed to his injuries the following day. The shooting occurred on Seventh Avenue in the northwest area of the city, where Tarpinian-Jachym was interning for Rep. Ron Estes from Kansas.
Authorities confirmed that an adult woman and a 16-year-old boy were also shot and killed in the incident, but the shooter remains at large. It appears Tarpinian-Jachym was not the intended target in this chaotic event, which involved multiple individuals firing from a vehicle.
In a heartfelt letter to Eric’s family, dated July 17, Trump expressed his devastation over the “pointless act of violence.” He reassured them that, while the full impact of Eric’s life may never be fully comprehended, his memory will be carried forward through the kindness and dedication he showed to his loved ones and community. Trump emphasized Eric’s pride in representing his office and the nation.
Additionally, a manhunt is underway, supported by the FBI, following the shooting that claimed the life of this promising intern.
“Eric is forever in my heart. I vow to never forget the horrific actions that took him from us. My administration is committed to enhancing safety in our streets,” Trump remarked in the letter. He concluded with a blessing for Eric’s family, expressing hopes for their continued strength and peace.
In a recent interview, Eric’s mother, Tamara Jachym, shared that her son faced many challenges throughout his life, notably severe dyslexia, but persistently overcame them. Her words conveyed pride and admiration for his resilience, noting that he found belonging and acceptance in Washington, showcasing his genuine, bright spirit.
The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of $40,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible, urging anyone with details to come forward and contact them.
