Trump's election victory created 'fear' among Hamas captors.

Release of Israeli Hostage Changes Following Trump’s Reelection

Omer Shem Tov, who was taken captive by Hamas during the Nova Music Festival in Israel on October 7, 2023, talked about the impact of Donald Trump’s reelection on his treatment as a hostage. The experience lasted 505 days, during which Shem Tov faced numerous forms of abuse, including isolation and labor, along with psychological torment.

He noted that conditions shifted somewhat on November 5, 2024, the day Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election. Interestingly, Shem Tov learned about Trump’s victory from his captors, who had access to a television in their underground hideout.

“As soon as Trump was elected, I saw the fear in their eyes,” Shem Tov shared. “They knew that everything on the ground is gonna change, that something else is gonna happen, and they were scared. They were very scared.”

He added, “They wanted Kamala to be elected; but as soon as Donald Trump was elected, they understood that he wants to bring the hostages back home. So, immediately the way they treated me changed.”

He observed that after the election, his captors began to offer him more food and displayed greater empathy. This contrast was striking, given the earlier neglect and starvation he faced. In fact, despite being surrounded by food in the tunnels, he lost over 50 pounds before being released in February 2025 as part of a hostage agreement.

After his release, Shem Tov visited Washington, D.C., where he met Trump at the White House, expressing gratitude along with other freed hostages. “I told him (Trump) that many in Israel believed he had been sent by God to help bring back the hostages,” he recalled. “And he made that promise. He made that promise, he said that he will bring back all the hostages.”

Currently, a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza is in place following a peace initiative launched by Trump in September, aimed at securing the release of all remaining hostages. Almost all hostages have been freed, except for one police officer who was executed, with his body still in Gaza.
