TSA Clarifies Waffle House IDs Are Not Valid for Travel
This week, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) joined a social media conversation, emphasizing that Waffle House IDs held by some customers are “not sufficient” for travel identification. A flight passenger shared a picture of his Waffle House ID with the caption, “TSA might need a real ID, but I might have the most realistic ID.” This post quickly gained around 2.1 million views, along with numerous likes and shares.
In response to these social media posts, the TSA made it clear that such IDs do not comply with federal regulations and cannot be used at security checkpoints. They stated, “To pay tribute, no… Waffle House ID is not enough to replace the actual ID (sorry).” Many took to the comments to express surprise or curiosity about this unique form of identification.
Fox News Digital reached out for more information from Waffle House. Users on social media were curious, with one asking, “How do you get this?” while another quipped, “I thought this was America.” Someone added, “I’ve never been so jealous of internet strangers.”
Earlier, the TSA had also advised travelers not to use Costco cards as valid IDs. They noted, “We love hot dogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person, but stop telling people that their Costco cards will count as their actual IDs because Costco cards are definitely not.” With the actual ID requirements implemented from May 7th, a flyer was essential to obtain a new identification with a star in the corner to fly.
The TSA does accept other forms of identification, such as a valid U.S. passport, Global Entry, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards, and Border Crossing cards. I think it’s interesting how a lighthearted exchange turned serious really quickly, highlighting the importance of adhering to security regulations.
