Recently, TSA officers made an unexpected discovery in a passenger’s checked luggage after an alarm was triggered by an Xbox console.
This unusual incident was shared by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It took place this month at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York City when a passenger was going through security.
According to the TSA, “The bag alarmed on an Xbox gaming system, and TSA Officer Ashley Leo, who was overseeing the resolution area, redirected the bag to the checked baggage resolution section, where Supervisory Transportation Security Officer (STSO) Christopher Ramos was present.”
What Ramos found in the bag next to the Xbox was particularly notable.
As he sifted through the contents, he uncovered “a plastic bag containing several fake IDs located next to the Xbox that set off the alarm,” the TSA reported.
The officer remarked, “I noticed various driver’s licenses with differing dates of birth and different classifications, but all featured the same photograph.”
He added, “I was concentrating on adhering to our screening protocols and was particularly alert to anything that seemed out of the ordinary. Upon spotting the counterfeit IDs, I recognized it was crucial to report the incident through the appropriate channels.”
After engaging TSA management and the Port Authority police, it was confirmed that the IDs were indeed fraudulent, leading to the arrest of the passenger just moments before he was due to board his flight.
TSA LGA Federal Security Director John Essig stated, “STSO Christopher Ramos’ strict adherence to standard operating procedures, attention to detail, and awareness of his surroundings prevented the fake IDs from entering a secure area of the airport.”
He emphasized, “Identifying fraudulent IDs is a vital aspect of TSA’s layered security approach. It ensures that individuals accessing secure zones in the airport are who they claim to be, thereby supporting the safety of all travelers.”
This encounter forms part of a series of remarkable finds made by TSA officers at airports nationwide.
In Texas, for instance, TSA officers at Dallas Love Field Airport discovered a pocketknife concealed within a tube of toothpaste during routine carry-on checks.
Similarly, TSA officers at Tampa International Airport in Florida found a 4-inch, double-edged knife hidden inside a flashlight designed to look like a baseball bat.
