Tua Tagovailoa’s Future with the Dolphins in Question
Tua Tagovailoa’s time with the Miami Dolphins might be coming to an end, and he seems to be okay with that.
The 27-year-old quarterback, a former first-round draft pick, has faced ongoing concussion issues throughout his career. In a press conference after the season concluded, he responded to reporters by saying a new beginning is “great.”
“I think that’s fine,” he noted, though he didn’t go into much detail. Reporters who engaged with him understood this to imply he was looking at opportunities elsewhere.
Following the Dolphins’ elimination from playoff contention, Tagovailoa was benched alongside third-string quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers, who started from Weeks 16 to 18, managed 622 passing yards along with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
A report from NFL Network indicated that it seems Tagovailoa is “unlikely to play again” with the Dolphins.
Throughout 14 starts this season, he threw for a total of 2,660 yards, achieving 20 touchdowns but also racking up 15 interceptions. These figures didn’t meet the expectations that arose when he signed a hefty $212.4 million contract extension in July 2024.
Next year, he is set to earn $54 million, making it his seventh season with the franchise. Despite the expectations, he has only made one Pro Bowl appearance and played in just one playoff game so far. The Dolphins had a promising start to the 2023 season, yet it ultimately ended in disappointment with an early playoff exit.
There’s some uncertainty surrounding head coach Mike McDaniel’s position, as he managed to keep his job after the firing of longtime general manager Chris Grier in October. He wasn’t among the first wave of coaches to be let go after the regular season, which adds a layer of complexity to the team’s future.
Miami had a rocky start, going 1-6, but ended the season on a stronger note, finishing 6-4 in their last ten games.
Tagovailoa has shown glimpses of his potential, particularly after the Dolphins brought in Tyreek Hill in 2022 and drafted Jaylen Waddle in 2021, forming an exciting receiver pairing.
However, a severe head injury significantly impacted his career trajectory. Notably, he suffered his fourth documented concussion since 2022, and a fifth while playing at Alabama back in 2019.
After Week 4 in September 2024, some suggested he consider retirement, but he made a comeback, starting the next nine games before missing the final two due to a hip injury.
