Tua Tagovailoa Responds to Cam Newton’s Criticism
Tua Tagovailoa hopes that playing quarterback isn’t as challenging as it’s often perceived.
Recently, during an episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton took aim at Tagovailoa’s performance this season, especially in light of the four-year, $212 million extension he signed last summer.
Newton highlighted Tagovailoa’s struggles at the beginning of the 2025 season, where the 27-year-old has thrown four interceptions and achieved a quarterback rating of just 35.8.
“Tagovailoa’s salary is higher than that of Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, and Jaden Daniels,” Newton noted. “Am I watching? Not really, but I’m putting this in perspective.”
He added, “With a big paycheck, there should come higher expectations… what you’re paid, what you’re asked to do, and your capabilities—all this matters, especially when your tools are top-tier.”
Tagovailoa acknowledged his slow start in the season, admitting he hasn’t met his own expectations. However, he chose to brush off Newton’s comments and instead pointed to a collective of football experts.
“It’s easy for anyone to critique from a distance,” Tagovailoa remarked. “Cam might feel that way, but, you know, it’s different when you’re actually out there on the field.” He seemed a bit more reserved as he weighed his response, possibly reflecting on the pressures that come with the position.
The Dolphins’ 0-3 start marks their worst since 2019, with Tagovailoa throwing interceptions in each loss. Looking ahead, they will face a Jets team that allows an average of 31 points per game, placing them tied for fourth in the NFL.
