Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) walked out of former President Trump’s hush-money criminal trial courtroom Monday, calling the Manhattan courtroom “the most depressing thing I’ve ever been in.”
“First of all, I was disappointed in the courtroom. I hear ‘Mr. Mr. Trump, Mr. Trump. “He is ‘former President Trump,”’ Tuberville told the media outside court.
“Give him some respect. I mean, that place is there. That’s not respect. Here’s what I see too. It’s depressing. That courtroom is depressing. This is New York City. It’s a symbol of our country. And the courtroom we had was the most depressing one I’ve ever been to.”
Mr. Tuberville took aim at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), saying he walked into the courtroom and “acted like it was his Super Bowl.”
Tuberville, who attended the trial along with Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-New York), also appeared at the trial as a friend of President Trump rather than a political supporter. He said he attended.
“The Republican candidate for President of the United States is experiencing emotional distress in court and is very depressed and very depressed. I am happy to support President Trump. I am his friend. I support him as a presidential candidate. “I’m here more as a friend than a supporter,” he said.
The remarks came amid much-anticipated testimony from Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer who has been named as the prosecution’s leading witness in the hush-money case. Mr. Trump is charged with falsifying 34 business records over a $130,000 hush-money payment that Mr. Cohen sent to a porn actor in 2016 to keep him quiet about an alleged affair with the then-candidate. .
Since then, Mr. Cohen and Mr. Trump have been at each other’s throats, making Mr. Cohen’s testimony particularly volatile as it is the second time he has taken a stand in Mr. Trump’s case.
President Trump has a gag order that prohibits him from attacking witnesses, prosecutors, court staff, and the families of judges. But his allies in Congress have no such restrictions.
In remarks to the press on Monday, Tuberville went after Cohen, calling him a “convicted felon” and blaming Democrats for the accusations against Trump.
“This man worked for President Trump. “They can’t beat President Trump in the voting booth, so they’re trying to beat him in the jury box,” he said.
Speaking in front of Tuberville, Vance also went after a judge, a district attorney, and a political consultant who is the judge’s daughter, saying he has made “millions of dollars opposing Donald Trump and that Donald Trump He is raising money for his political opponents.”
Judge Juan Melchan, who is overseeing the case, rejected President Trump’s request to recuse himself from the case because of the alleged conflict.
“There’s no agenda here,” Marchand said last month. “We want justice to be done.”
