Tulane’s Football Team Secures Victory Over Northwestern

Tulane’s football team enjoyed a solid win, defeating Northwestern with a score of 23-3 on Saturday. It was pretty clear that the Green Wave had something more than just a game on their minds; there seemed to be an element of personal revenge involved.

The game took place at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, a location that holds a lot of history, especially considering how Hurricane Katrina forced Tulane to relocate their home games to various stadiums in Louisiana and Alabama in the aftermath of the storm.

In a nod to their past, Tulane chose to don a green helmet reminiscent of their 2005 look, paired with white jerseys—which was a bit of a departure since home teams commonly wear colors.

Interestingly, Northwestern opted for white tops for their season opener, and Tulane’s head coach, John Sumrall, had asked his team to wear white in honor of the 2005 squad. However, this request was turned down, which might have fueled the team’s motivation a tad more.

Sumrall noted, “It’s their privilege, but that’s what you get when you downplay New Orleans. You’re going to meet a team like this.” A little competitive spirit, perhaps?

Reflecting on the uniform situation, he mentioned that while they didn’t get to wear the exact colors they wanted, it was still a chance to represent their city. “Don’t underestimate New Orleans,” he added, hinting at a resilient spirit.

The Superdome remained closed until 2006, impacting not only Tulane but also the New Orleans Saints, who had to move as well. It’s all intertwined, really: history, emotion, and a sense of place.

Sumrall’s journey with Tulane has had its ups and downs since he first joined the team in 2012. He took on different roles, stepping away after the 2014 season only to return as head coach last year following the previous coaching stint.
